Thanksgiving- New Home Build with Old Home Upgrades

Thanksgiving will be the first celebrated holiday in our new home. It is hard to believe we just moved to Courtenay, BC only 10 weeks ago. So much has happened since we arrived. With the new home build freshness, it still needed a healthy dose of comfy traditional lines and a feeling of something more lived in over time. So I called a contractor friend Michel from Ottawa, ON that has helped me with several remodels over the last 7 years. My list of design must-haves were; new mouldings on the main floor, new window design, new fireplace surround and some upgrades to the master bedroom. The completed work took only 9 days and thankfully we still had time to socialize with Michel and his wife Lori every evening. I am always in shock at my friend’s speed and quality of work. He always puts forth the best in every design plan and really gets what I am envisioning every time.

I remember two years ago when I mentioned to Michel how much I loved the old windows sitting in the garage. These windows were the ones removed during renovations on the 157 year old house. There were some doors in the garage as well and he grabbed at least a half dozen of them. We both totally hit the jackpot. I am so happy I decided to bring the windows with me all the way to BC. Now they will function as a placement area for seasonal wreaths for years to come. The swapped pains of glass tell the story of the windows age. Some are soft pink, some soft blue and others clear. Just so happens, both colours are my favourite.

The other treasures brought from Ontario were gifted from friend John who lived next door to us. Interestingly John was born in the house we resided at in Stirling, ON. The incredible antique stone crock jugs were one of the nicest gifts anyone has ever given. These stone crocks are so lovely that they became the inspiration for this year’s Thanksgiving table decor. I love how they boast dominant greyish tones, hues of brown and blue at the same time. Just lovely I must say! John, if you are reading this, thank you buddy. The antique jugs will be forever treasured in our home, thanks!

To keep the blue and grey colours dominant in this colour palate, I selected these pumpkins from Coastal Black Winery during their fall pumpkin festival. They have the largest variety and selection of pumpkins, gourds and squashes I have ever seen at a pumpkin patch. To learn more about their incredible place, read my blog about my recent tour there with Justine, one of the owners of Coastal Black Winery. To balance the warm and cool colours for this Thanksgiving table, I added some chocolate coloured napkins from Rally.co link herein-http://www.rallyco.ca/ out of Courtenay, BC, knitted table charges from Metropolis Cafe out of Newmarket, ON and soft delicate pampas grass also from Metropolis. Link herein- https://metropolismercantile.store/ . I love the pampas grass so much and have used it for several photo shoots over the years.

The soft smoked finished flutes for this table setting come in a set of 8 with 4 different colours of pink, gold, grey and pumpkin. Not all colours were used for this table placement. During the pandemic it was difficult to source things for each photo shoot while creating my cookbook. When I needed to source things for my cookbook decor, nearly all locally owned and operated stores were closed. I usually shop locally but in a pinch, Amazon came through. I get a lot of compliments on these glasses. I noticed that the price has gone up since my purchase two years ago but I still think they are worth it. Also another great Amazon find are the beautiful white and gold cutlery. Link herein- https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08JC5HWZ3/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=A1ZH8E7OOP7BNY&psc=1

A new home build with these finishing touches, makes it feel as though we have lived here for many years. My husband Dan and I are totally ready to enjoy a hot cup of pumpkin spiced latte and curl up with a good book. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Let gratitude fill your heart during this special Holiday Season.
