New Home Christmas
Hey beautiful people. To see this decorating on a virtual time lapse video click link here https://youtu.be/9iowFYFUfQI
When I was a little girl, decorating was so much fun with six siblings running around helping to place things here and there and dancing to Christmas songs by Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Frank Sinatra and many other top music artists of that era. Back then the decor on the Christmas tree had swank with loads of Tinsel and a modest pop of colour with handmade popcorn cranberry garland and traditional coloured lights. If you were from the 70’s and early 80’s you would immediately recall this familiar view in every Canadian home during the holidays. Today’s Christmas tree has no particular must haves and lately people are decorating trees to look vintage, stepping into the memories of Christmas pasts. Maybe we were doing something right back then after all, lol.
The one tree style I have always gravitated to is a classic rustic tree with red, white and wood ornaments. The last seven years a specific tree has always had this decor style and the first year I bought it, a client came to our house and fell in love with it. She later decided to capture our entire home for her magazine. That tree has now found a new home on the front porch for the last two years and is often gazed at with company while enjoying a hot cocoa or glass of wine.
Other trees in our home tend to change slightly in colour but the festive lights have remained golden white since the early 2000’s. In these photos you will see I carried the golden white bulbs throughout the home. This new home in BC boasts high ceilings so my husband wanted to buy an extra tall Christmas tree to fit the space and bring our gaze to the living room loftiness. After adding crown molding throughout the main floor living space it feels very cozy even with the high open ceiling. The creamy white walls and fireplace surround called for delightful pops of red, sparking gold and silver on the tree and throughout. I wanted the decor to appear slightly vintage yet rustic and at the same time classic traditional. My head space is always full of lots of creative ideas so it is impossible for me to have one specific design. To bring in the vintage touches, I added some glass bulbs and handmade bells.
Also some adorable knitted stockings. For the garland I used two styles to give it more definition by using a faux eucalyptus ivy and some traditional white spruce garland I purchased years ago at a farmers market. I love how the spruce trees have extra long needles. It makes the perfect garland for tucking decorations into or blending with another garland like I decided to do here. Those adorable vintage knitted stockings are hanging on the stairwell from the exact same garland I placed on the mantel.
Now if you are wondering about that beautiful holiday themed blanket hanging over the firewood rack here is the link
Having warm throws are perfect for a winter cuddly day don’t you think?! I usually have several throws where our family lounges and blankets like this one make the perfect decorative statement as well.
Those beautiful wreaths hanging from the heritage windows I brought from our country home were bought in support of Jillian Harris. She recently launched a Christmas line and my gosh, her stuff is gorgeous. These wreaths are handmade using real preserved boxwood. They are soft to the touch and are absolutely stunning. If you want to get your hands on one they are currently on clearance.
Although this is my first time decorating this space for Christmas, it is so cozy and feels like our forever home. Time to take in all the warmth and love of family, traditional yummies and lots of winter fresh air.
Happy Holidays and may this season bring you great company, good health and loads of laughter!
